Yesterday night I couldn’t sleep, so I went to the TV and watched Blackkklansman, that incidentally was being screened. I swear that I knew nothing from this movie, aside of Adam Driver starring in it, and that I believed it was a dark comedy. It turned out to be more. Much more.
I was really pleasantly surprised to see the depth and the variety of things put within. There are multiple levels of lecture in this movie. I have heard that Spike Lee was a good director, and now I blindly believe it.
What I liked the most was that the branching of subplots felt natural and consequent, and not forced. The net meshed. Also, the acting was amazing. John Washington and Adam Driver make a superb, flowing duo, and that the issues of racism are boldly, bluntly and openly presented and denounced, without feeling that they were forcefully put on the table out of the movie frame and context. I also see that Spike Lee and his team don’t rely on a closed or extremely radical view on the issues, since they explore more views and expand the field, which leaves for a lot of introspection and reflections, while never leaving the side they defend.
The blacksploitation references and aesthetics (and especially the OST) were just sweet cherries on the top of all. Powerful imaging and imaginery make the rest.
Overall, a fine piece of movie art and reivindicative paradigm for me. Easily one of my favourite movies I’ve watched this year.
